Author Lori Gottlieb on KWMR's "Viewpoint" Author of Marry Him: The Case for Settling for Mr. Good Enough speaks with host Ellen Shehadeh. Single and forty, Gottlieb examines why so many women of a certain age who would like partners are alone. Looking at her own life, and speaking with many researchers and other experts, she makes a strong insightful case that women often dismiss excellent potential partners who do not match their strict criteria, in the constant search for their perfect “Prince Charming.” |

Carol Kearns, author of Sugar Cookies and a Nightmare, at Point Reyes Books Carol Kearns, Ph.D., has recently published Sugar Cookies and a Nightmare, a book which recounts her journey from the depths of despair after the death of her daughter to the person today who is actually a better person for it. For Carol, a single mother in 1976 who had taken her children, seven-year-old Kristen, and nine-year-old Michel, on a vacation with friends to the Oregon Coast, that challenge took the form of a rogue wave that dragged Kristen out to sea. Michel and several other children were standing next to Kristen at the time but remained unharmed. Carol never saw Krissie again. Carol fought back from this tragedy, earned her Ph.D., and became a psychologist specializing in grief and crisis issues. Her book is an uplifting memoir that has two voices. One is that of the bereaved mother who struggled to create meaning in her life. The second voice is that of the seasoned psychologist who trained with Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, M.D., a pioneer in the field and author of the classic On Death and Dying. |

Turtle Island String Quartet at the Dance Palace Its name is derived from creation mythology found in Native American folklore. The Turtle Island Quartet, since its inception in 1985, has been a singular force in the creation of bold, new trends in chamber music for strings. Winner of the 2006 and, most recently, the 2008 Grammy Award for Best Classical Crossover Album, Turtle Island fuses the classical quartet esthetic with contemporary American musical styles; and by devising a performance practice that honors both, the state of the art has inevitably been redefined. Cellist nonpareil Yo-Yo Ma has proclaimed TIQ to be “a unified voice that truly breaks new ground—authentic and passionate—a reflection of some of the most creative music-making today.” |
