Developing Story: THS Braves football season undefeated
Posted Wed. Feb. 7, 2007 -------- Tomales High School Football (Boys Varsity) team season record becomes undefeated.
The 2006 Tomales High School Football team lost the Championship game to Mendocino High School. But Mendocino has forfeited the game and the season. For a time they were the North Central II League Champions. Now that championship is vacant, Tomales High School is the runner-up and Tomales’ record stands at 11 and zero.
The Braves started the League Championship game with an undefeated record. They lost the game 6 to 27 to Mendocino High School. With spring sports beginning early season practices, the Braves season record changed for the better. Mendocino High School fielded a fifth-year player for the football season and the current basketball season.
Initial indications by officials for the Coastal Mountain Conference are that Mendocino did not file the proper paperwork for eligibility for a student that was in his fifth year of high school. The student, Bryce Poehlmann, spent the year between his sophomore and junior seasons in Mexico with his family. This makes him a year older than other seniors on varsity teams. The school was required to petition the Coastal Mountain Conference to maintain his eligibility, they failed to do so.
The Mendocino High School basketball team does not play in the same league as Tomales High School. MHS has a 6 and 2 basketball record against league teams, while holding a 7 and 10 record overall. They will have to forfeit their basketball games for the season. Mendocino played Tomales twice during the football season. Tomales won the Sept. 30 game 46 to zero. When they met again, in the league championship, Dec. 2, Tomales lost 6 to 27. Poehlmann scored one touchdown in the championship game. Mendocino closed their league football season with a 5 and 1 (the loss to Tomales) and a 9 and 2 overall record.
All agree Poehlmann is an outstanding athlete, with skills and a competitive edge that are the seeds of success in college sports.
Tomales Football Coach Leon Feliciano was baffled Wednesday when another Coastal Mountain Conference official was quoted in the Santa Rosa Press Democrat saying that the forfeit by Mendocino will not automatically award the Championship to Tomales, “It’s just left vacant.” North Coast Section Commissioner Tom Ehrhorn told the Local Daily, Mendocino must return the pennant and all awards received by the team.
A hearing will be held Friday, Feb. 9 to determine the reinstatement of eligibility for Poehlmann. Eligibility could be reinstated for him retroactively, for future games or not at all.
Felciano said, “rules are rules and that is why we have rules.” Mendocino High School Principal Gail Dickenson is quoted by the Local Daily saying, “It’s the school’s error. Ultimately it was my error.”
The eligibility problem came to light when another school in the Mendocino basketball league questioned Poehlmann’s status. When the Mendocino High School officials checked, they admitted they had erred by not keeping his status up to date. Word flashed around league and school officials last Thursday about the problem. At that time league officials said the Championship would be awarded to Tomales.
Ehrhorn confirmed Wednesday, the historic practice at the league level is to leave the Championship vacant when eligibility questions arise. Tomales High School Boys Football 2006 are still the runner’s up but their season record changes from 11 and 1 to 11 and zero.

Tomales Boys Baksetball team loses a close game to Roseland Posted Jan. 20, 2007 -------- With consecutive wins against Santa Rosa Christian and Sonoma Academy, the Tomales boys basketball team was ready to battle an improved Roseland team, and it was a battle.
The lead changed hands many times over the course of the game with Roseland finally prevailing 30-26 in this defensive struggle. Roseland pushed ahead in the fourth quarter and was able to hold on against Tomales who managed to score only four points. Roseland was led by Gerald Jones with 16 points. Tomales Captain James Self contributed 13 points and 7 rebounds and Andrew Hammond added 7 points off of the bench; but that was it for the Braves. No other player could log more than two points for Tomales. "Ultimately, our fine defensive effort was undone because Roseland was able to out-rebound us throughout the game," said Tomales coach Maurice Weir.
Weir added " this was a big game for us. We are battling Roseland for third place in league and a spot in the Castleberry Tournament, but we play them once more."
Roseland's record is 10-7, 4-2 in league and Tomales is 11-5, 2-2 in league. Tomales next plays at Geyserville Tuesday, at 7 pm.
Tomales Girls also lose to Roseland Prep in a tight game L 31-35
Tomales Boys keep their winning ways
Posted Jan. 17, 2007 -------- On Friday night, the Tomales Boys team won an exciting game over Santa Rosa Christian, 49-39. Tomales had a slim 19-16 halftime lead and used a second half surge lead by James Self, Andrew Hammond, and Casey Karlow who totaled 29 of Tomales 30 second half points to overcome a persistent SRC team. For the game Self had 24 pts., Hammond had 14 and Karlow had 6.
Tomales boys won again Tuesday night at Sonoma Academy, 56-25. A half court trapping defense enabled Tomales to get off to a 23-5 first quarter lead and Tomales coasted to the victory. All players played about half the game. Tomales was lead by James Self, 22 pts. 6 reb. and 4 blocks, Bailey Tucker, 14 pts. and 5 steals, Casey Karlow added 8 pts., Stirling Weir had 4 pts., 6 reb. and 2 blocks, and Eric Martinoni provided a spark off the bench with 4 pts. and 4 rebs. Tomales record is 2-1 in league and 11-4 overall. "If we can play defense with this intensity the rest of the year, good things are in store for Tomales," said coach Maurice Weir.
Rather than accepting a forfeit win, Tomales is trying to re-schedule the game that Geyserville was unable to play because their players were out sick.
